Low Fat Diets

MYTH: Don’t work because society in general is gaining weight.

TRUTH: Low fat is better than high fat, but understanding what ingredients are in food is key to losing weight long term.

Low Calorie Diet

MYTH: Eating fewer calories slows down metabolism and causes the body to store fat.

TRUTH: The ONLY way to lose weight is take in fewer calories. If this wasn’t the case, why does surgery — which shrinks the stomach and limits the amount of food eaten — work?

Low Carb Diets

MYTH: Carbs and sweets are bad. Never eat them again and you’ll lose weight.

TRUTH: Giving up carbs and sweets completely - forever -  is unrealistic and the second you eat a french fry, piece of pasta or a cookie the weight is back. Not eating carbs zaps your energy, too. Moderation is key.

Diet Clubs (Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.) / Gym memberships

MYTH: These programs work for life.

TRUTH: These programs work as long as you’re a member, buying their food without cheating. Carrying around the “plan” food is inconvenient. Gyms are expensive and time consuming. Long term weight loss and maintenance is unlikely.

Colon Cleanse / Fat Loss 4 Idiots / Etc.

MYTH: By Eating foods in different combinations you will lose huge amounts of weight fast.

TRUTH: If weight comes off fast it comes back fast the moment you stop following the plan. Eating strange combinations of food long term is not practical, healthy, or effective. Even if fish and nuts are two foods you like, is anyone thrilled (or satisfied) with a meal consisting of fish and nuts?
